KANDA: A three star Michelin three star restaurant in Azabu near the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo. For those that are skilled at getting lost, please make a mental note that Kanda is the owner chef's name and not the name of JR Station. Do not go looking for this restaurant near Akihabara.
Of the 14 Michelin Three star restaurants in Tokyo area, this place draws the most differences in opinions - probably the most controversial. I think this is due to their service, which is a bit rough around the edges; not a the refined and polished service that you would normally expect from such expensive restaurant. We tried their 20,000 Yen course. My understanding is that the 15,000 Yen course is the same food without a meat dish.
Despite some issues that I saw as I sat at the counter and closely watched the movements of the staff, I still decided to give them 5.0 score. Why? Well, their food was darn good. I feel that the overall score should not always be the average of the decor, service, cost performance, etc. If one aspect of this restaurant out shines the rest, it becomes a place that is worth repeating. I look forward to returning to this place after I save up some money.
